February 1993 Bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City

The February 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City marked the beginning of an ugly new phase of terrorism involving the indiscriminate killing of civilians. The World Trade Center bombing was motivated by the desire to kill as many people as possible. The target of the bomb plot was the World Trade Center (WTC) complex, a sixteen-acre site in lower Manhattan. Although the explosion killed six people and injured more than 1,000 the consequences could have been far worse. The a WTC bombing was involved of terrorist use of chemical weapons. Evidence indicates that Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind was behind the attack. WTC bombing turned out to be a group of New Jersey men who had been suspected of terrorism for more than two years.Yousef attended a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan, where he honed his skills as an explosives expert. He then traveled around the world working as a professional terrorist in the name of Islamic Jihad, although expressions of religious faith or motivation were notably absent from his statements. The Terrorists selected the World Trade Center as a target not because it was a symbol of Western values or the financial power of the United States, but simply because toppling the twin towers would enable them to inflict a large number of casualties.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/29/AR2007062900160.html

British police displeased a pair of apparent terrorist attacks in central London crowded theater district Friday, defusing bombs fashioned from gasoline, gas cylinders and nails and hidden inside two parked Mercedes sedans. Police said that if the explosives had detonated, they could have killed or injured hundreds of people. They found the first car. Police found the first car -- a pale green Mercedes parked outside the upscale, three-story Tiger nightclub near Piccadilly Circus An ambulance crew responding to an unrelated call at 1:30 a.m. noticed smoke in the vehicle and alerted authorities. According to British television reports, a police officer found a cell phone inside the vehicle that was to be the bomb's trigger and turned it off. No one asserted responsibility for the bombs, and police announced no arrests. But a senior government official said the two explosives are linked to al-Qaeda. Many people from London shrugged off the news, saying they no longer feel rattled by such threats. Al-Qaeda operatives have drawn up plans in the past to attack in London by detonate cars stuffed with gas cylinders and other explosives. In July 2004, counterterrorism officials in Pakistan seized a laptop computer containing directions for a plot to blow up three limousines in an underground parking garage in Britain.

General Information About Terrorism

Terrorism is the use of force or violence against persons or property in violation of the criminal laws of the United States for purposes of intimidation, coercion, or ransom.
Terrorists often use threats to:
Create fear among the public.
Try to convince citizens that their government is powerless to prevent terrorism.
Get immediate publicity for their causes.
Acts of terrorism include threats of terrorism; assassinations; kidnappings; hijackings; bomb scares and bombings; cyber attacks (computer-based); and the use of chemical, biological, nuclear and radiological weapons.
High-risk targets for acts of terrorism include military and civilian government facilities, international airports, large cities, and high-profile landmarks. Terrorists might also target large public gatherings, water and food supplies, utilities, and corporate centers. Further, terrorists are capable of spreading fear by sending explosives or chemical and biological agents through the mail.
Within the immediate area of a terrorist event, you would need to rely on police, fire, and other officials for instructions. However, you can prepare in much the same way you would prepare for other crisis events.
General Safety Guidelines:
Be aware of your surroundings.
Move or leave if you feel uncomfortable or if something does not seem right.
Take precautions when traveling. Be aware of conspicuous or unusual behavior. Do not accept packages from strangers. Do not leave luggage unattended. You should promptly report unusual behavior, suspicious or unattended packages, and strange devices to the police or security personnel.
Learn where emergency exits are located in buildings you frequent. Plan how to get out in the event of an emergency.
Be prepared to do without services you normally depend on—electricity, telephone, natural gas, gasoline pumps, cash registers, ATMs, and Internet transactions.
Work with building owners to ensure the following items are located on each floor of the building:
Portable, battery-operated radio and extra batteries.
Several flashlights and extra batteries.
First aid kit and manual.
Hard hats and dust masks.
Fluorescent tape to rope off dangerous areas.

Spy Agencies Say Iraq War Hurting U.S. Terror Fight

The war in Iraq is the new generation of potential terrorist around the world is believe to be increasing faster than all the United States and it allies put together. ," Bush said in an address earlier this month to the Military Officers Association of America, "we've removed terrorist sanctuaries, disrupted their finances, killed and captured key operatives, broken up terrorist cells in America and other nations, and stopped new attacks before they're carried out. We're on the offense against the terrorists on every battlefront, and we'll accept nothing less than complete victory." I don’t think the war in Iraq is necessary. We not seeing a outcome of the war. Everyday soldiers are dying. Government is spending too much money on the war. Instead of helping the people in this country Bush is spending billions of dollars in Iraq.
