The US has charged a Guantanamo Bay detainee with war crimes for the 1998 al-Qaeda attack on the US embassy in Tanzania, which left 11 people dead.

Khalfan Ghailani was captured in 2004 for murdering and attacking civilians. The pentagon claim that Khalfan worked for al-Qaeda after the bombing. Khalfan was Osama Bin Laden bodyguard. If convicted Khalfan face a death penalty. He is the 15 person charged at Guantanamo where his trail is expected to start this year. Khalfan goes by dozens of names to hind his identity. The United states have a lot of evidence that Khalfan Ghailani involvement in terrorism is buying explosives, detonator and transporting bomb components to Dar Es Salaam, helping buying the lorry used in the attack, escorting the bomb engineer between Dar Es Salaam and Mombassa, Kenya, after the bomb had been made, also scouting the US embassy with the suicide bomb driver. After the bombing he continue to service to the al-Qaeda. In 2007 in a close door hearing he admitted that deliver explosives to blow up the embassy and apologized to the US government and the victims families
